Wilma B. Baumer, age 94 of McCartyville, Ohio, died on Sunday, May 12, 2024 at Elmwood Assisted Living, New Bremen. She was born on July 5, 1929 in St. Henry to the late Frank & Rose (Faulke) Schmitmeyer. She married Lawrence Baumer on April 14, 1951 and he preceded her in death on January 1, 2007. She is survived by children: David & Peg Baumer, McCartyville, Mike & Marilyn Baumer, Bellbrook, Patrick & Sharon Baumer, Noblesville, IN, Cindy & Ron Vondenhuevel, Minster, Gary & Lynn Baumer, McCartyville, 12 grandchildren & 22 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, sister Dorothy Jutte, New Bremen, brother Don Schmitmeyer, Anna. She was preceded in death by a great granddaughter, in-laws: Don Jutte, Doris Schmitmeyer and Andrew & Maxine Baumer. Wilma cherished her family and celebrated the arrival of each new family member. Family dinners and yearly family camping trips were highlights. She loved people and loved being of service to others. Strangers turned to friends quickly as she discovered mutual relatives or friends. She was raised by loving parents on the family farm outside of McCartyville. She graduated from Anna High School and worked briefly at Montgomery Wards before taking a job at Bernhold Insurance Company in Sidney. After marrying “Louie” in 1951, she lived on the family farm, caring for five busy children and grandparents, raising chickens and tending a large garden and fruit trees. She was a very active member of the Shelby County Farm Bureau where she held leadership positions, participated in Fair activities and baked cookies for Soil and Water camps along with many other activities. She belonged to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, McCartyville, and was a member of the Rosary Alter Society. Her church activities included teaching Religious Education, being a Eucharistic Minister, and coordinating funeral lunches. Later, she gathered a team of friends to bake and serve pies at the Church picnic. Her friends quilted together, donating the quilt for the church picnic raffle. She volunteered at Fairhaven Nursing Center, enjoyed playing cards, traveling and quilting. She will be remembered fondly for her deep love of family, friends and community and her strong faith in God. Her beautiful smile and kind heart will continue to inspire and comfort us. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, May 17, 2024 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, McCartyville. Burial to follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home in Minster on Thursday, May 16, 2024 from 4 to 7 PM and at SACRED HEART CHURCH on Friday, May 17 from 9:00 to 10:00 AM.
