Thelma E. Huwer, age 89, of Cranberry Prairie, died on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County in Troy.

She was born June 6, 1937, in Carthagena, Ohio, to the late Frank & Helen (Knapke) Balster. On April 18, 1959, she married Harold Huwer. Thelma & Harry were married for 67 years, and Harry survives on their home farm in Cranberry Prairie.

Thelma is survived by four children and their spouses, Carol & Gary Hartings of Maria Stein, Janet & Terry Bills of St. Henry, Marilyn & Mike Osterholt of St. Henry, and Roger & Karla Huwer of Cranberry Prairie, as well as 13 grandchildren: Greg & Jena Hartings, Brent & Grace Bills, Jennifer & Todd Brophy, Travis & Stefanny Bills, Austin & Alana Bills, Sarah & Wes McDowell, Amanda & Derek Goettemoeller, Matt & Rose Osterholt, Kelly & Gavin Peacock, Elizabeth & Andrew Osterloh, Caleb Huwer, Allison Huwer, and Miranda Huwer, and 16 great grandchildren, and siblings and in-laws, Carl & Alice Balster, Marylene & Mark Brunswick, Lillian & Sam Moorman, Bill & Rita Huwer, and Joan Shivers.

In addition to her parents, Thelma is preceded in death by a son, Steve Huwer, a grandson, Brad Hartings, as well her father and mother-in-law, Aloys & Olive Huwer, and in-laws: Alma & Wally Sweeterman, Irene & Andy Makley, Dolores & Norbert Gels, and Robert Shivers.

Thelma grew up in rural Carthagena and graduated from St. Henry High School. She worked for The Peoples Bank Co. until she decided to work from home caring for her family. Thelma was a dedicated farm wife and worked alongside Harry on their farm for all their married life. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Cranberry Prairie and of the Ladies Sodality at the church. Thelma enjoyed working in her garden and playing cards with her friends and family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, June 19, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Cranberry Prairie. Following the funeral mass burial will take place in St. Francis Cemetery. Friends and family may call from 3:00 - 7:00 PM on Thursday, June 18, or from 9:00 – 9:45 AM on Friday, June 19, at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home in St. Henry. Those wishing to honor Thelma’s memory may consider doing so by making a memorial contribution to the St. Francis Chuch Building Fund, the Center for Neurological Development in Burkettsville, or Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County.
