Si (Marcellus) M Luthman

On May 11, 2016 after a four year battle against kidney failure and diabetes, just 2 months shy of his 90 ^th birthday, Si Luthman courageously overcame his final earthly enemy so as to cross the River Jordan with his Savior Jesus Christ, enter an agriculturalist’s paradise and begin cultivating grounds in the heavenly kingdom.

Si (Marcellus Martin) Luthman was born July 14, 1926. He served in the military as Army and Air Corp mechanic from April, 1944 to October, 1946. On April 14, 1948 at Holy Angels Catholic Church, Sidney, OH, he married the one-and-only love of his life, Margaret L. Schmidt. They celebrated their 68 ^th anniversary this past April.

Si was the son of Ben (Bernard) and Amelia Luthman. He is predeceased by son Roger (October,1952) and by brothers Vernon, Orville, Vince, Melvin, Merlin and sister Gloria Luthman; brother-in-laws Ralph Hempfling, Melvin, Ray, Val and Sebastian (Shorty) Schmidt and sister-in-laws Edwina Chappie, Aggie Heintz and Irene Bishop.

His wife Margaret survives him, with children Ron Luthman (Joyce Cunningham) of Kenosha, WI; Kathy Morris, Mount Sterling, OH; Paul (Bev) Luthman, Anna, OH; Gary (Deb) Luthman, Troy, OH; Susan (David) Stieg, Reno, NV; Diane Iiams, Anna, OH; Harold (Brenda) Luthman, Sidney, OH; Carol Luthman, Sidney, OH; along with sister Rosalie Hempfling of Findlay, OH, sister-in-laws Agnes Luthman of Botkins and Pat Luthman of Sidney; brother-in-law Lester Schmidt of Covington, OH and sister-in-laws Lucy (Ray) Schmidt of Sidney and JoAnn (Shorty) Schmidt of Bradford, OH.

Si was a proud Grandpa to 17 grandchildren (Adam, Mandy, Kyle, Kelly, Stacy, Josh, Jeff, Andy, Brendan and Caleb Luthman, Bethany, April, Linda and Joe Morris, Nathan Stieg, Chad Supinger and Tiffany Iiams-Estes) and 19 great-grandchildren with 3 more on the way.

Si attended Hardin and Holy Angels Schools. Though he never graduated high school, Si possessed a knowledge of farming, production, marketing, mechanical and diesel engineering equivalent to any master’s degree. He was first and foremost a farmer, taking great pride in quality work. He believed in doing a job right the first time, enjoyed the challenge of fixing things and always planned and strategized to be efficient and thorough.

Si valued his relationships with friends and business customers. Some might consider Si to have been a work-a-holic but he found pleasure in playing cards, boating, fishing, Saturday-night square dancing, playing guitar or harmonica and travelling. He very much enjoyed taking friends on vacations to share sites and adventures as proved by his bus trips to Opryland, Dollywood and the Bible Walk Museum.

Si was a member of McCartyville Sacred Heart Church and extremely appreciative of Father John’s loving care and guidance.

A funeral Mass will be held Saturday, May 14, 2016 at McCartyville Sacred Heart Catholic Church officiated by Father John Tonkin with interment at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may visit with family in the Gathering Space of Sacred Heart Church from 4-8:00 PM on Friday, May 13, or from 10-11 o’clock prior to the funeral on Saturday.
