Ronald A. Huber

August 6, 1943 — April 1, 2026

Covington

Ronald “Ron” Anthony Huber passed away quietly, from cancer, on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, with loved ones at his bedside. He peacefully spent his last days with many friends and family members by his side.

He was born in Celina, Ohio on August 6, 1943, the son of Margaret (Braun) and Gregor Huber. He was one of their fourteen children. Ron wowed many over the years as he told the story about a lesson learned while chopping wood with his father. He chose to be the annoying little brother by placing his foot on the log his brother was working on. The impending dare in the story left everyone he told asking to see if his foot was truly missing a few toes.

On November 27, 1965, Ron married the love of his life, Luella Gasson, in Frenchtown. They made their home together in Northstar. The two attended St. Louis Catholic Church, also in Northstar, when he wasn’t away for work. She went on numerous truck-runs with Ron through the years. Unfortunately Luella was taken from him way too soon, a loss that broke his heart.

Ron spent most of his life driving a semi-truck, something he truly enjoyed doing. He met many friends through the years and ended his career by retiring with Moeller Trucking. His favorite phrase on the road was “Hammer Down” which left him with the nick-name The Hammer and possibly a “few” speeding tickets.

He met Roberta “Jean” Robbins in July, 1996. They never married and were just friends at the time of his passing. He moved to Covington, Ohio in 2000 and spent the rest of his life living there. In that time, he became a stepfather to Jean’s three children, Scott Robbins (Andrea Seifring-Robbins), Tammy Walling (Tony Angle) and Tricia Sommer (Josh). He was the world’s best grandpa to five grandchildren- Cody, Tori, Grace, Brooke and Aubrey. And he was blessed by his eight great grandchildren- Jameson, Nolan, Darcy, Samuel, Layton, Stevie, Annamae, and Callum, with one more on the way. It brought him great joy, days before he passed, when he learned the gender of this baby, a surprise being kept from the rest of the family. His grandchildren and great grandchildren absolutely adored him. They could often be found right by his side watching Westerns together, eating a yummy snack, helping him garden and playing with their current favorite toys. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for his “kids”.

He could have won an award for the kindest man alive. No one was a stranger to him. He would help anyone and everyone in need. He was the God-father to multiple nephews and nieces and was there to walk his God-daughter, Darla, down the aisle on her wedding day, shortly after her own father had unfortunately passed away.

He was a strong family man. He enjoyed chatting on the phone and visiting his siblings, nephews and nieces. Many Friday and/or Saturday nights were spent going out to eat with his sister Alveria and Vic Rutschilling. They were known to travel hours away just for the perfect T-bone, one of his favorites.

He had a passion for gardening and grew some pretty impressive crops. His tomatoes were used to make award winning spicy salsa. And his cabbages yielded many quarts of sauerkraut over the years. Ron loved to gamble when given the chance and rarely missed trying his luck playing the lottery. His final bucket-list wish was to make one final trip to Montana, one of his favorite places to visit. His health in the last few months unfortunately didn’t allow that.

He is survived by three sisters, Alveria Staugler of Osgood, Roberta Wagner of St. Marys, Antoinette Burger of Celina, and many well-loved nephews and nieces.

He was proceeded in death by his wife, parents, brothers (sisters-in-law) Joseph (Agnes) Huber of Coldwater, Norbert (Dottie) Huber of Celina, LeRoy (Cathy) Huber of Celina, Victor Huber of Carthagena, Albert Huber of Carthagena, Alfred Huber of Carthagena, Louis Huber of Celina, sisters (brothers-in-law) Betty (Donald) Lange of Celina, Helen (Ronald) Dunlap of Celina, Alberta (Roger) Wagner of VanWert, and brothers-in law Paul Staugler of Carthagena, Donald Wagner of Celina and Lynn Burger of Celina.

Ron chose to simply be cremated and laid to rest, next to his wife, at St. Louis Cemetery in North Star. Friends are encouraged to visit the Hogenkamp Funeral Home website at hogenkampfh.com to leave notes of condolence for the family.
