Robert L. Berger

Robert L. Berger, age 84 of North Star, died on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at his home in North Star.  He was born on November 7, 1939, in Yorkshire, Ohio to the late Edmund & Mary (Christian) Berger.  He married Shirley (Gavit) Berger, his wife of almost 60 years, on August 29, 1964.  Shirley survives him at their home in North Star.  Bob is also survived by children: Pamela (David) Subler of Worthington Ohio, Lisa (Brian) Bergman of Rossburg Ohio, and David (Kara) Berger of Montgomery Ohio.  Other survivors include 11 grandchildren, Ashley (Brian) Daniels, Anna Marie Subler (fiancé Aaron Skinner), Andrew Subler, Abigail Subler, Austin Bergman, Taylor Bergman, Megan (Brad) Siebeneck, Amber Bergman (fiancé Riley Dilworth), Jackson Berger, Alex Berger, Logan Berger, and great grandchild, Dorothy Daniels. He is also survived by siblings Marjorie Speelman, William Berger, Patricia Knapke, Elizabeth Hassenauer (Bob Lake), Madonna (Terry) Winner.  Robert is survived by in-laws Treva Berger, Karen (Virgil) Puthoff, Margaret Gavit, Rebecca (Henry) Pohlman, and Patrick (Margo) Gavit.

In addition to his parents, Bob is preceded in death by siblings and in-laws: Joseph Berger, Gene Speelman, Janice Berger, Paul Knapke, John Gavit, Michael (Patricia) Gavit, and his father and mother-in-law, Robert & Dorothy Gavit.

Bob attended both Versailles and Marion Local Schools and graduated from Marion Local in 1958.  He then went on to earn his associates degree from Miami Jacobs and worked as an accountant for several years.  He later worked for his father-in-law with Gavit Paving, before owning his printing business and then working at Superior Aluminum in Russia.  Bob was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society.  He was also a member of the Versailles Eagles and Knights of Columbus.  Bob was a great storyteller and was musically gifted as well, playing both the harmonica and accordion.  He loved gardening, fishing, and watching any kind of sporting event.  He served his community on the North Star town council and enjoyed spending time with friends.  Most of all he loved his family, and often expressed his appreciation and love for each of them.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at St. Louis Catholic Church, North Star, Ohio.  Burial in St. Louis Cemetery will follow the funeral mass.  Friends may call at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home, St. Henry from 4:00pm to 8:00pm on Monday, April 15, and at the Church from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM on Tuesday April 16th.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Darke County Cancer Society.  Condolences may be left at hogenkampfh.com.
