Richard J. Smith of Shippensburg PA died peacefully on June 23rd.   A long-time resident of Coldwater, Richard was the son of Norbert and Leona (Theis) Smith of Coldwater.  He was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where he was baptized, received Holy Communion and his Confirmation.  He and his wife, Patricia (FitzGerald), celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Holy Trinity Church in 2005.  Wife, Patricia, preceded him in death in 2014.

Richard was a graduate of Coldwater High School and the University of Dayton.  He served in the US Army as a combat infantryman in France and Germany in WWII.  Professional work included Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in St. Marys, OH;  Ball Brothers Research in Muncie, IN; and Pax Steel Products, Inc. in Coldwater.

Surviving is daughter Angela Sachleben, and husband, Mark, of Shippensburg PA, and son, David, and wife Karen, and two grandsons, Cameron and Spencer, of Manlius NY.  Richard’s sister, Elaine Turner, and husband, Jerry, of Coldwater.  Another sister, Wilma Fecher, preceded him in death.  Brother-in-law Joseph resides in Brookville OH.

Richard moved to Shippensburg, PA in 2008 and was a member of Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 am on Thursday July 13, 2023 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Coldwater.  Burial with military rites will follow at St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Coldwater. Condolences may be left at Hogenkampfh.com.
