Obituary

Maurice J. Harting, age 96 of Coldwater, passed away surrounded by his family on Friday, March, 20, 2026, at Briarwood Village in Coldwater. He was born on September 22, 1929, in Maria Stein to the late William and Anna (Bertke) Harting. He married Mary Ann (Homan) on July 3, 1954, at St. John the Baptist Church in Maria Stein, Ohio. They were happily married for 68 years before her passing in July 2022.

Together they had 1 son, Jim and Elaine (Siefring); 3 Grandchildren, Angie & Jim Wourms, Matt Harting, and Gina & Eric Weitzel; and 13 Great Grandchildren, Alaina, Alexis, Easton, Livvy, & Evan Wourms; Rowan, Winsleigh, Gradey, & Laikynn Harting; Kason, Maddox, Reese, & Levi Weitzel.

He is also survived by in-laws, Dolores Cron of Coldwater and Dorothy (Daniel) Eifert of Cassella.

He was preceded in death by siblings and in-laws, Eugene & Marge Harting, Roman & Mary Harting, Richard & Dorothea Harting, Paul Harting, Carl & Bertha Harting, Virginia Harting, Sally & Tom Abele, Walter & Rita Harting, Ruth & Lawrence Luthman, Othmar & Rita Homan, Leonard & Alice Homan, Maurice Cron, Irene & Roger Will, and Viola & Lester Stammen.

He began his education next door at the Harting School which later became part of the land he farmed. After that school closed, he attended Cassella School and graduated from St. Johns High School in 1947. He was always very proud of having played on the first football team at Marion Local which at the time was St. John’s High School.

Maurice proudly served his country in the 194th Engineer Combat Battalion in Korea from August 1951 thru May 1953. After returning home, he and Mary Ann continued the family farm. After retiring from farming, Maurice and Mary Ann moved to Coldwater to be closer to their family.

To know Maurice was to love him. He always had the right words to say, with his big heart, gentle spirit, and kind soul. What he loved most was being surrounded by his family. His face lit up when anyone came to visit. Along with spending time with his family, he enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and following most sports.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Coldwater. He was also a member of the Maria Stein and Coldwater American Legions, Coldwater VFW, Coldwater Eagles, and Catholic Financial Life for over 50 years.

The family is very grateful for the wonderful and compassionate care shown to Maurice and his family by the Staff at Briarwood Village and also the wonderful nurses and aides of EverHeart Hospice.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 pm on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Coldwater.

Friends may call at Hogenkamp Funeral Home, Coldwater, from 8:30 to 11:30 am on Tuesday, March 24. Burial with full military honors will take place in St. Elizabeth Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Everheart Hospice or Coldwater E.M.S.
