Malvina Ann Simon, age 91, formerly of Russia, passed away in Columbus, on Friday, February 14, 2025. Malvina (known to her family as “Mallie”) was born in Springfield, Ohio, on May 17, 1933, to the late Everett and Alice Rowland (Sharbaugh). On July 4, 1959, she married Clarence Simon, and he preceded her in death on March 11, 1988.
Malvina is also preceded in death by her infant daughter Mary, her son Gary, brother Marshall Rowland, and sisters Alice “Marilyn” Kober, Margaret “Madge” Deters, and Marian Krueger. She is survived by her children Glenn Simon (Marilyn) of Tipp City, Marjorie Simon of Columbia, Maryland, and Stan Simon (Wendy) of Los Altos, California, her grandchildren Annabel and Nicholas, step grandchildren Jason Stammen (Chris) and Kimberly Niekamp (Brent), her brother Mark Rowland (Carol), her sister Madalene Power (Greg), brother-in-law James Krueger, sister-in-law Ruth Simon (Bernard), and many nieces and nephews.
Malvina graduated from the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, and taught reading and music at Russia Local School for 29 years.
She started pipe organ lessons at age 10, began playing at her local parish in Springfield at age 12, and at other parishes in the Springfield area for 15 years. She later became a member of St. Remy parish in Russia, where she was church organist and choir director for 43 years. She also taught piano and organ to numerous students of all ages.
Malvina spent most of her life in Russia, but when she was nearly 80, she decided to move to California to be near her son Stan, his wife Wendy, and her grandchildren Annabel and Nicholas. She enjoyed living in California and loved spending time with Annabel and Nicholas.
A private burial ceremony will be held at St. Remy Cemetery, and a memorial mass will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Malvina’s memory to a charity of your choice.
