Madeline C. Maurer age 72 of 79 S. Main St., Ft. Loramie, Ohio died at 11:00 PM on Friday, February 15, 2013 at her home after long battle with cancer. She was born on July 18, 1940 in Ft. Loramie to the late John & Victoria (Borchers) Albers. She married James R. Maurer on October 28, 1961 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Ft. Loramie. He survives in Ft. Loramie. She is also survived by children: Jeff & Julia Maurer, Sidney, Vicki & Moe Quinter, Ft. Loramie, James P. & Linda Maurer, Ft. Loramie, Bill & Kathy Maurer, Ft. Loramie, Jenni & Mark Wilt, Ft. Loramie, Ed & Amanda Maurer, Ft. Loramie, 18 grandchildren, brothers & sister John "Bucky" & Judy Albers, Centerville, Patty & Doug Lockard, Huber Heights, Paul & Sandy Albers, Minster. She was preceded in death by an infant sister Cathy. She served 32 years as an elementary teacher and administrator of which she spent the majority in the Ft. Loramie School District. She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Ft. Loramie, and embraced her Catholic faith. She was a member of the Governing Board of the Shelby County Educational Service Center, Upper Valley Joint Vocational School Board of Education, Ft. Loramie Community Service Club, Altrusa International of Sidney, Shelby County Retired Teachers Association, Knights of St. John Auxiliary, Advisory Board of Wilson Hospice Care, Advisory Board of Shelby County Mental Health Center, Delta Kappa Gamma & the International Reading Association. She initiated the St. Jude Mathathon Program at Ft. Loramie Elementary School and was a founding member of the Shelby County Reading Association. She was the 1958 Valedictorian of Ft. Loramie High School. She completed the Cadette Teaching Program at The University of Dayton in 1960. She graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Education from UD in 1969 and a Master's Degree in Education from UD in 1982. She was inducted in 1971 into the Beta Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher Honor Society and held several offices including president from 1985-1986. She was the 1979-1980 Ft. Loramie Teacher of the Year, a 1979 Nominee for Ohio Teacher of the Year, 1988 Celebrate Literacy Award recipient from the International Reading Association and the 2001 Outstanding Senior of Shelby County Retired Teachers. She served many years in religious education; co-D.R.E for 11 years & as a catechist for 25 years. She was an inductee in the inaugural class of the Ft. Loramie Wall of Honor in 2009. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, February 21, 2013 at St. Michael Catholic Church with Rev. Steven Shoup celebrant. Friends may call at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home, Minster from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, February 20 and from 9:00 to 10:00 AM on Thursday February 21.
