Louis E. Schlater

October 1, 1932 — July 5, 2023

Louis E. Schlater, age 90, of North Star, died on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at his residence in North Star.

He was born October 1, 1932, in Ft. Loramie, to the late Clem & Genora (Coverman) Schlater.  On May 21, 1955, he married Irene (Hemmelgarn) Schlater, and she preceded him in death on April 5, 2009.

Louis is survived by six children and their spouses, Sharon & Bill Langenkamp, North Star, Jane & Gary Smith, Versailles, Bob & Judy Schlater, St. Henry, Nick & Jane Schlater, North Star, Joe & Lynne Schlater, Versailles, and Cindy & Randy Giere, Coldwater: 26 grandchildren and 72 great-grandchildren.  Also surviving Louis are siblings and in-laws: Ken Schlater, Melvin Schlater, Don & Margaret Schlater, Betty & Paul Sherman, Velma Schlater, Paul Braun, Ruth Westgerdes, and Mary Mestemaker.

In addition to his parents and wife, Louis is preceded in death by two great grandchildren, Gracelyn Schlater, and Irene Regina Schlater, as well as siblings and in-laws: Ed Schlater, Earl & Virginia Schlater, Marilyn Braun, Marilyn Schlater, Norman & Beverly Hemmelgarn, Cyril & Odesse Hemmelgarn, Clete & Florece Hemmelgarn, Paul & Donna Hemmelgarn, Andrew Westgerdes, and Paul Mestemaker.

Louis was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, North Star, its choir for over 50 years.  He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the North Star American Legion Post 174.  Louis worked for a short time at the former New Idea factory in Coldwater and was a lifelong farmer.  He enjoyed golfing, bowiling, trap shooting, and playing cards.  Louis and his wife Irene both greatly enjoyed ballroom dancing and spending time with their family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Louis Church, in North Star.  Burial with military honors in St. Louis Cemetery will follow the funeral mass.

Friends and family may call 2-8 p.m. Monday, July 10, at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home in St. Henry, and 9-10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Louis Church, North Star.
