John Sherman Meyer

He was born on May 21, 1923 in Celina to the late Harry and Ocie (Fast) Meyer. A graduate of Celina High School in 1941, he was called to duty while a student at Ohio Wesleyan University. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp During WWII, primarily in China Burma India Theater. After the war he earned his Bachelor's Degree in education from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1949 and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.
He was quite the basketball player in his younger years, playing for his school, college and armed forces teams. In 1950 he married Aldyth Barber from his home town of Celina, spending 62 years together. John worked 35 years in the human relations for Ranco, where he retired. He also was a friend and confidant to the patrons of The Backstretch Bar, helping with its operation after the death of his son: Jeff Meyer in 1999. An avid golfer, he participated in numerous area golfleagues and enjoyed gardening. He was also a member of the St.Mark's Lutheran Church. He will be remembered for his friendly nature and warm smile. In addition to his wife: Aldyth (Barb), he is also survived by daughters: Judith Clancy of Scottsdale, AZ, Cynthia (Rick) Schlichting of New Providence, NJ, daughter-in-law Joanne Meyer of Delaware, Grandchildren: Kyle Meyer , Dr. Beth Kevin Bockhold, Kate (Nate) Johns, Meg Schlichting, Corine (Brendan) Graber, Joanne Clancy, and loyal friend Matt Smith.
In addition to his son Jeff, He was also preceded in death by his brother Lee Meyer, who was lost in the S. Pacific during WWII.
Friends may call from 3-5 P.M. Tuesday at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, 75 W. William St., Delaware, where services will follow at 5:00p.m. with Rev. Ward Cornett III officiating. A second service will be held at 2:00p.m on Wednesday May 23, 2012 at the Lehman-Hogenkamp-Dzendzel Funeral Home, 901 Myers Rd. Celina, Ohio 45822, with Rev. Douglas Meyer officiating. Burial will follow in the North Grove Cemetery in Celina, with Military Honors provided by the Celina American Legion Post #210 and the Celina V.F.W. Post #5713.
