Donald B. Hummel

Donald B. Hummel, age 85, of Saint Henry, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded his family on Friday, July 10, 2020. He was born on May 23, 1935, to the late Bernard & Marie (Uhlenhake) Hummel. He married Joan Meier at Saint Rose Catholic Church on October 31, 1959 and she survives in St. Henry.

Don is survived by four children: Patrick Hummel of Saint Henry, Beth (Harold/Harry) Hart of Fort Recovery, Jane (Tom) Enneking of Lewis Center, Ohio, and Bernard/Ben (Jean) Hummel of Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren: Tyler Hart, Tana Hart, Joshua Enneking, Nikki Enneking, Zachary Hummel, Adam (Alexandra) Hummel and Matthew Hummel. He is also survived by his sister, Helen McEvoy of Cincinnati, sisters-in-law: Julitta Overman, Eileen Pleiman, Velma Hartke, Marilyn Uhlenhake, Edna Reichert of Coldwater, Lillian Homan, Anita (Lester) Homan of Maria Stein, Diana (Don) Albers of Osgood, and Mary Lou Broerman of Minster, Ohio. Also surviving are three brothers-in-law: Larry (Mary Jane) Meier, Nick (Margie) Meier, Maria Stein, and Dale (Jane) Meier, Versailles, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Hummel, and his sister, Ruth Krieg, his parents-in-law, Al and Rose Meier, his brothers-in-law: Lionel Krieg, Bernard McEvoy, Bernard Overman, Bernard Pleiman, Richard Hartke, Arnold Homan, Ernie Uhlenhake, Lavern Reichert and Rich Broerman.

Don served his country in the Army from 1957-1959 where he was based near Bamberg, Germany. He was employed at Saint Charles Seminary as head of maintenance and a licensed boiler operator. He retired in 2002 after 41 years of service. Don was a member of the Saint Henry Catholic Church, the Maria Stein Legion, and the Heritage Club at St. Henry.

Don spent much of his life serving his community. He served as a volunteer fire fighter and Captain on the St. Henry Fire Department for 22 years and helped teach new recruits. In 1975, he was instrumental in founding the St. Henry Emergency Squad and went on to serve as a volunteer EMT and First Responder for 21 years. Don also served as an elected trustee for Granville Township and on the Board of Directors of the Mercer County Joint Township Community Hospital for 12 years.

In addition to farming, Don enjoyed fishing, studying steam locomotives, bird watching, wine making, ballroom dancing and traveling. Don and Joan spent many happy years traveling together and he especially enjoyed trips to Germany and Belgium to visit family and friends. Don loved spending time with his family, who he visited often, as well as spending time with his close group of friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial with limited seating due to social distancing will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2020 at Saint Henry Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Henry Cemetery with full military honors.

Friends may call at Hogenkamp Funeral Home St. Henry from 2 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday July 15th and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday.
