Charles Henry Hoying (Charlie), age 94 of Minster, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2025 at Elmwood Assisted Living of New Bremen in the presence of loved ones. He was born on October 1, 1930 in Minster, Ohio, to the late Louis I. & Della (Dickman) Hoying, the sixth of seven children. Charlie attended Minster Local Schools and graduated from Minster High School in 1948. He was a lifelong member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Minster. Charlie was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters Louis A. & Rita Hoying, James & Irene Hoying, Donald & Edna Hoying, Adele & George Fernandez, Marie Hoying and Robert Hoying. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marcille (Kremer) Hoying and his children Tony (Cindy) of Waynesville, Nancy (Tom) Rodeghero of Richmond, Indiana, Carol (Charles) Hoehne of Fort Loramie, Becky (Pat) Butler of Minster, Gail (Greg) Hoelscher of Minster, and Jenny (Robert) Osterday of Loveland; twenty grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Charlie is additionally survived by his sister-in-law Janet Hoying and many nieces and nephews. Inspired by his father’s and older brothers’ military service during World War I & II, Charlie enlisted and served in the United States Army in Korea during the Korean War as a platoon sergeant with the 35th Regimental Combat Team of the 25th division. Upon his return from war, Charlie began his career with the Minster Machine Company in its pattern shop, where he worked faithfully for 43 years until his retirement. During his retirement, Charlie worked part-time as a courier for Minster Bank. Charlie loved his birthplace and home in Minster, Ohio, and he was actively involved in uplifting the community throughout his life. As a young father, Charlie served as a little league manager, an American Legion baseball manager, and a Cub Scout master. For nearly 40 years, he collected tickets at the gate for all Minster High School home football games. Charlie was instrumental in establishing the Minster Area Life Squad and served as its first treasurer. He was a member of the Minster Eagles 1391 and the Minster Historical Society. Additionally, Charlie designed the iconic gazebo housed in Minster’s Centennial Park. He planned and built the original scale model which was used as a blueprint for the gazebo’s final construction. Charlie was also a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, the Travelers Protective Association, the Cataract Fire Co., and the Lake Loramie Improvement Association. In 2019, Charlie was named the 45th Grand Marshal of the Minster Oktoberfest Parade to celebrate his involvement in the community. Charlie found great camaraderie with fellow veterans and served terms as a commander and as an adjutant for both the Minster American Legion Post 387 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6432. He was a member of the V.F.W. for over 70 years. Charlie was also commander of the Veterans Firing Squad; he served at numerous military funerals. Charlie Hoying was a loving and loyal husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Sunny days usually found him fishing at Lake Loramie or tending to his garden. He was an accomplished woodworker, and he took great pride in the home and family he built with his wife, Marcille. Charlie never met a stranger; when you were a friend of Charlie’s, you were a friend for life. He will be dearly missed. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, February 21, 2025 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Minster. Burial will follow in St. Augustine Cemetery with full military honors by the Minster Firing Squad.
