Bernard J. Hemmelgarn age 97 formerly of east Sixth St. , Minster, Ohio died Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at Elmwood Assisted Living, New Bremen, Ohio. He was born on January 16, 1917 in Cranberry Prairie, Ohio to the late Charles & Philomena (Goettemoeller) Hemmelgarn. He married Alvina M. Overman on June 17, 1939 at St. John Catholic Church, Maria Stein, Ohio. She preceded him in death on June 20, 2009. He is survived by children Carol & Jim Opperman, New Bremen, Marlene & Larry Prenger, Minster, Ronald & Diane Hemmelgarn Villa Ridge, MO, Dennis "Duff" Hemmelgarn, Minster & Paulette (Babe) Hemmelgarn, Elmwood, New Bremen, 16 grandchildren & 1 deceased, 42 great grandchildren & 3 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sisters Olive Huwer, Katherine Budde, Cecelia Albers, and Sister Lelia Hemmelgarn, brothers Paul, Albert & Justin. He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Minster, St. Augustine Men's Choir for over 40 years, F.O.E. #1391 Minster, Minster Athletic Boosters & Booster of the Year. He was a life member of the Minster Civic Association & Citizen of the Year in 1989. He volunteered in the construction of Minster Memorial Stadium, was an avid sports fan & enjoyed fishing. He retired as owner and operator on the Mobile Service Station Minster and as a Realtor for Red Kuck Realty. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 Saturday, February 22, 2014 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Minster with Rev. Rick Nieberding celebrant. Burial will take place in St. Augustine Cemetery. Friends may call at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home, Minster from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, February 21, 2014 and from 9:00 to 9:30 AM on Saturday, February 22, 2014. Memorial contributions may be made to the Minster Athletic Boosters and the Elmwood Activity Fund. Condolences may be made at www.hogenkampfh.com .
