Alice V. (Gehle) Smith, age 88, of 501 Portland St., Celina, Ohio passed away at 4:50p.m. on Friday, May 20, 2011 at Laurels of Shane Hill Rockford, Ohio. She was born on February 23, 1923 in Van Wert , Ohio to the Late Joseph and Esther (Grote) Germann. On September 28, 1991 she married Lloyd Smith, who died July 27, 2010. Alice is survived by: sons & daughters-in-law; Donald & Roberta Gehle of Celina, Bernard & Paula Gehle of Lima, Kenneth & Diane Gehle of Celina, Karen Gehle of Celina, daughters; Patricia & Tony Bailey of Roanoke, VA, Susan & Larry Downam of Celina, Emma & Ray Tregembo of Fresno, CA, 18 Grandchildern, 21 Great Grandchildren brother and sister-in-law; Howard & Marvalle Germann of St. Marys and Lois Germann of Celina.
She was preceded in death by:
First Husband Clarence Gehle, who died Sept. 11, 1976, Sons Rudy Gehle, Wilfred Gehle, Dale Gehle, brothers Elmer & Bernice Germann, Arthur & Pauline Germann, Lester & Nina Germann, Paul & Yvonne Germann, Herbert Germann, sisters Agnes & Millard Teboe, Mildred & Fredrick Germann, Mable & Ada Prichard, Ireta & Harold Grace, Helen & Fred Searight and Norma & Charles Zizelman and Laura & William Kahn.
Alice graduated from Van Wert High School in 1941. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Celina, the Alter Rosary Sodality at I.C. Catholic Church. She was a member of the Celina Senior Citizens and the Mercer County Council on Aging. Alice was awarded the Outstanding Senior Citizen of the year in 1992. She was a member of the Sunshine Singers, a member of the Celina V.F. W. Post #5713 Auxiliary and was a Hospital Worker for the Military order of the Cooties.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday May 24, 2011 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Fr. Ken Alt officiating. Burial will follow in Mercer Memory Gardens in Celina. Friends may call from 2-8p.m. on Monday and 9-10a.m. on Tuesday at the Lehman-Hogenkamp-Dzendzel Funeral Home in Celina.
