Agnes Anna Pohlman

October 20, 1917 — October 14, 2016

“An Ordinary Woman Who Led an Extraordinary Life”

Agnes Anna Pohlman, age 98 (just six days shy of 99) of Maria Stein, Ohio, passed away at 7:59 a.m. Friday, October 14, 2016 at Versailles Health Care Center, Versailles, Ohio.  She was born on October 20, 1917, the fifth of ten children, in St. Henry Ohio, to the late George and Bernadine (Schmackers) Lefeld. She married Otto J. Pohlman on May 15, 1946 and they lived together in Maria Stein until his death on May 7, 1964. She is survived by one brother, Henry (Trudy) Lefeld and a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Lefeld,  seven children and their spouses, Kenneth (Barbara) Pohlman of Dayton, Ohio, Harold (Patricia)Pohlman of Bristol, Pa. ; Virginia Pohlman of San Francisco, Ca.; James(Janie) Pohman of Sidney, Ohio; Donald (Pamela) Pohlman of Versailles, Ohio; Ronald (Margaret Quinn) of Oakwood, Ohio; and Mary Jean (Jeffrey Lamperti) Pohlman of Califon, N.J,; along with 22 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by eight siblings, Joseph (Marcella) Lefeld; Alvina (William) Stammen; Dorothy (Richard) Kuess; Seraphim (Clarina) Lefeld; Edward (Viola) Lefeld; Bernadine (Alfred)Homan; Bernard (Agnes) Lefeld; Martin Lefeld and two children, Jerald and Anthony Pohlman.

Agnes was a very active member of St. Johns Parish for many years. She was a founding member of the Maria Stein Chapter of the American Legion Auxiliary and a faithful supporter of the Maria Stein Shrine of the Holy Relics, especially the Sacred Heart Grotto. Her deep commitment to her Catholic faith enabled her to overcome the tragic loss of her husband at the age of 46, and raise eight children to have successful careers in medicine, law, academics, publishing and entrepreneurship. She was a loving mother and a charitable person who willingly sacrificed herself for her family, her community, and for those she encountered in her day to day life. She always was full of fun and laughter, ready to sing and to dance, and to make the world a happier place. Her favorite pastimes were traveling, enjoying her grandchildren, bingo and playing cards with her friends.  She was an artist in the kitchen; her raspberry dumplings and her coffee cake were always a big hit with the family.  We will miss her deeply but we will celebrate her core values, especially her perseverance, compassion and light heartedness.
