Fr. Francis Kinney, C.PP.S., 86, died Saturday, February 9, 2008, at 8:15 p.m. in the infirmary of St. Charles Center, Carthagena, Ohio. He had been in failing health for some time.
Fr. Kinney was born November 8, 1921, in Ironton, Ohio, to Francis and Norma (Eberfeld) Kinney. He entered the Community on September 1, 1943, and was ordained on May 15, 1947.
Fr. Kinney spent his life as a priest in education and in parish ministry. After his ordination, he became a member of the staff of Brunnerdale, a high school seminary formerly administered by the Community in Canton, Ohio. There, he was an instructor and later vice rector, principal and rector.
In 1957 Fr. Kinney was named the first principal of Central Catholic High School in Lafayette, Indiana, a position he held until 1960 when he returned to Brunnerdale.
In 1965 he received a new assignment, as dean of the Calumet, Ind., campus of Saint Joseph’s College (later the Calumet College of St. Joseph).
Fr. Kinney entered a new ministry in 1983 when he became pastor of St. Mary of Pine Grove, near his hometown of Ironton, Ohio. He served there until he retired to St. Charles last May.
He is survived by three sisters, Sr. Jean Kinney, OP, of Scotia, NY; Marcia Hock of Vandalia, Ohio; and Henrietta Hanifin, Ironton, Ohio; four nephews, and great-nieces and great nephews.
Deceased are two brothers-in-law, Robert Hock and Charles Hanifin, and one nephew, Chris Hock.
Fr. Kinney was a people person, gregarious and hospitable, said Fr. Thomas Nau, the pastor of St. Joseph Church in Ironton. “He was very kind to people, and very appreciative of people,” Fr. Naus said. “He enjoyed being with people, and always made visitors feel at home.” He was an accomplished pianist and loved to sing.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, February 14, at 2 p.m. at St. Charles, Fr. Angelo Anthony, C.PP.S., presiding. Burial will follow in the Community cemetery.
Calling hours will be held at St. Charles on Wednesday, February 13 from 1-5 and 7-9 p.m., with a prayer vigil at 7 p.m.
